IDA was developed to allow application programmers an easy-to-implement, efficient, fast and powerful access to the MIB objects of the InSight system. Application programmers utilizing IDA are encouraged to learn and understand SNMP and MIB design. However, detailed SNMP knowledge is not required to utilize the IDA libraries to access the data available thru the controller agent and MIB.

 

 

The IDA developer’s package includes support (libraries, DLLs, and sample programs) for:

 

• Windows NT/2000/XP Applications
• 32-Bit 4690 C Applications
• 16-Bit 4690 C Application

 

 

Some advantages of the IDA APIs over standard SNMP are:

 

• Security: data is encrypted between the controller agent and the IDA clients.
• Efficiency: as efficient as SNMP is, the IDA message formats are substantially smaller than their equivalent SNMP messages.
• Event driven: SNMP is a polled protocol, IDA is event driven. This greatly reduces non-productive message exchanges.
• Session reliability: SNMP traffic is datagram, IDA is tcp.
• Simplicity: no SNMP agent is required. 4690s SNMP V1 agent has substantial limitations.

 

 

Enhanced functionality: IDA supports standard SNMP V3 GET_BULK functionality as well as two enhanced versions of GET_BULK. GET_BULK is a powerful function added in SNMPV3 that allows retrieval of multiple variables and multiple instances of table variables in a single request
